Carolina Panthers’ Thomas Davis speaks out about drunk driving

CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46) — A Carolina Panther is stepping out in front of an organization that he believes in. Thomas Davis is speaking out about drunk driving during the holiday season.

He’s a dad, a husband, and now an advocate. Panthers Linebacker Thomas Davis is supporting Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and their efforts to keep drunk drivers off the road this holiday season.

“It’s the holiday season and we understand that people like to go out and have a good time, but stress how important it is to do it responsibly,” Davis said.

Davis told the media he has never had a sip of alcohol in his life. A lifestyle he hopes to pass on to his children.

“To this day I have never had a drink of alcohol in my life, and even in college I was always the designated driver,” he said.

According to MADD, the holidays are one of the most dangerous times on our nations’ roadways. An increased number of holiday parties – where alcohol is served – has spiked those drivers who are under the influence.

Monday night Megan McTaggart was arrested and charged after driving drunk and crashing her car on North Tryon Street in the University area – killing her passenger Maverick Sloan, 52.

“All of the lives that have been lost, it’s a pointless situation when it could have been prevented,” Davis said.

Between Thanksgiving and New Years in 2015, there were 973 drunk driving fatalities across the country. The organization MADD is encouraging drivers to put a red ribbon on their keys or purse to encourage safe, sober driving this holiday season.
