LOS ANGELES, CA — Time to spring for that gym membership you think is out of your budget. What you really can’t afford is to NOT workout, according to a recent study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association.
Researchers from hospitals and universities around the country– including Johns Hopkins, Emory, and Baylor looked into the annual cost of being active or inactive- in terms of health care spending.
They crunched the numbers and found that working out will save you $2,500 each year. Researchers also concluded that us not getting our “moderate 30 minutes of exercise 5 days a week” costs the U.S. economy $28 billion a year. Worldwide, the figure is $86 billion.
People who don’t exercise are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and certain cancers. Treating those illnesses is expensive. Wouldn’t you rather buy a classpass?
Of course, it’s only worth it if you actually go. If you workout at home or outside, that’s like saving money twice! You’re gonna be the richest, hottest, and some day, the healthiest senior citizen out there.
