CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) — A woman was killed Monday evening after a suspected drunk driver crashed into a minivan while fleeing from a traffic stop on Interstate-85 in Mecklenburg County, police said.
The incident happened at 6:58 p.m. Monday, Dec. 18 on Little Rock Road at Interstate-85.
CMPD said Adelbert Redo was driving a 2009 Lexus LS460 northbound on I-85 when a North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper pulled him over for speeding. During the traffic stop, Redo resisted arrest and attempted to get back into his Lexus to leave.
Redo drove away from the traffic stop and started to drag the state trooper, who was trying to detain him. The Lexus sped away northbound on I-85. The trooper did not engage in the pursuit.
Redo exited at Little Rock Road driving at a high rate of speed. He lost control of his vehicle and went airborne across the southbound lanes of Little Rock Road. As the vehicle landed it struck a Cadillac Escalade and an Audi Q5, which were both stopped at the left turn signal for southbound I-85.
CMPD said the Lexus then struck a Chrysler Town and Country minivan, driving by Teresa Villanueva Ortuna, 45, who was traveling northbound on Little Rock Road.
After striking the minivan, Redo exited his vehicle and fled the scene on foot. An off-duty NC State Trooper witnessed the crash and chased Redo on foot, taking him into custody several blocks from the crash scene. CMPD said the investigation determined Redo was impaired by an alcoholic beverage.
Medic transported Ortuna and two passengers of the minivan to CMC-Main. Ortuna was pronounced dead while on the way to the hospital. The passengers were admitted with serious injuries. The drivers and the passengers of the other vehicles were not injured, police said.
Redo has been charged by CMPD with second-degree murder, felony hit-and-run, two counts of felony serious injury by vehicle, driving while impaired, and reckless driving. NC Highway Patrol has charged Redo with assault with a deadly weapon and resisting a public officer.
Redo is currently being held at the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office. The crash remains under investigation.
