Officer Brackeen passed away about 11:42 a.m. at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

On Saturday, September 10, Brackeen, 38, was in the area of Parkview Street in Shelby  searching for a person wanted on outstanding warrants. $25K reward offered for suspect in Shelby officer shooting

Investigators have secured warrants for 23-year-old Irving Lucien Fenner, Jr., who they say is the main suspect in the shooting.

Due to recent events, the charges in this case have now been upgraded to first degree murder, according to Shelby Police.

No decisions have been made on funeral arrangements.

“At this time our department asks for everyone to keep Officer Brackeen’s family and the entire department in their thoughts and prayers,” Shelby police said in a news release.

The state is offering $10,000 and various individuals and agencies in Shelby are offering $15,000 for information leading to the arrest of the suspect.

Senator Thom Tillis made the following statement:

“Today’s news is an absolute tragedy, and Susan and I extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Officer Tim Brackeen, the city of Shelby, and our state’s dedicated law enforcement community. Officer Brackeen courageously risked his life in order to bring a wanted suspect to justice and protect the community of Shelby. In doing so, he made the ultimate sacrifice, a sacrifice we will never come close to repaying.

“We can never forget about the debt of gratitude we also owe to the parents, spouses, and children of our law enforcement officers, family members who are forced accept the reality of the tremendous danger that confronts their loved ones every single day they go to work.

“I join North Carolinians in praying for Officer Brackeen’s wife and daughter, and for the safety of the thousands of brave men and women in blue who keep North Carolina’s communities safe.”

Governor McCrory made the following statement Monday:

“Ann and I are offering thoughts and prayers to both the Brackeen family and to the Shelby Police Department for the loss of their colleague,” said Governor McCrory. “Unfortunately this is another tragic example of the dangers those in law enforcement face in the line of duty each time they put on the uniform. The state is offering any assistance possible to help bring the individual or individuals responsible for his death to justice.”
