Carolina Waterfowl Rescue is asking for the public’s help in locating sick or dying ducks after at least 48 dead wild mallards were found this week at several ponds in the Indian Trail area.

2 of the ducks are being treated at the rescue now. They’re in critical conditions and its unclear if they will pull through, according to officials with Carolina Waterfowl Rescue.

Officials with the nonprofit suspect the birds were poised elsewhere and flew into the area or are suffering from botulism, an environmental toxin that can be found in water.

They said the preliminary results from the lab came back and it is not infectious.

Residents should lookout for ducks that are unstable on their feet or who can’t lift their heads or necks. The morality isn’t great but if they are found quickly they will have a chance.

Volunteers plan to go out to capture and rescue some of the ducks.

Information on botulism, here.

Anyone who sees a sick or dead duck should call the CWR hotline at 704-668-9486 or email hotline@cwrescue.org giving exact location details.
