UNCC police having safety discussion after recent problems

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (FOX 46 WJZY) — Shots fired, an armed robbery, sexual assaults and the latest a student talking about gun violence against the University.

All of these incidents happening in a manner of weeks on and around UNCC’s campus.

“I think the mood I gathered is a lot of people are worried,” said Jacob Baum, SGA Student Senator.

SGA members Jacob and Bryan sitting down with FOX 46 Tuesday afternoon to discuss the string of violence.

Monday’s alert to students, by far the most serious. A student not in town over spring break expressing gun violence against the school.

Both guys encouraged by how UNCC handled it, but Jacob wants to make sure the school is always being transparent.

“I was happy it was dealt with in a quick manner,” said Bryan McCollom, the student body VP.

“It was other issues that weren’t handled as well for instance the active shooting with the hit and run where individuals were on campus and students didn’t know about that for upwards of three hours,” said Baum.

Despite the recent dark cloud around the university, Jacob and Bryan say there’s no place they’d rather be.

Due to the recent safety concerns, the campus police chief will be holding a campus safety webcast Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
