Three teens charged with murder in deadly east Charlotte shooting

Three teenagers have been charged with murder in connection to a deadly shooting and attempted robbery that occurred in east Charlotte on Friday, police said. 

The deadly shooting happened in broad daylight at 4:48 p.m. Friday, April 20 in the 1500 block of Wembley Drive. 

Upon arrival, police found Eskinder Dawit Asefaw, 26, with an apparent gunshot wound. He was transported to CMC-Main with serious injuries. Asefaw died from his injuries at the hospital. 

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said information and evidence gathered during the course of the homicide investigation led them to arresting 17-year-old Tavone Tyrik Smith and a 15-year-old juvenile.

Police have confirmed that same 15-year-old was arrested at Garinger High School on Monday for having a weapon on campus. Police say he was also in possession of a stolen vehicle when he was arrested for having the weapon.

He has since been charged in murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon, conspiracy to commit murder, and conspiracy to commit armed robbery with a dangerous weapon. 

Detectives obtained a secure custody order against the juvenile and transported him to a juvenile detention facility. 

Smith is also charged with murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and conspiracy to commit armed robbery with a dangerous weapon.
