Teen murdered friends because of gang ties, police say

ROCK HILL, S.C. (FOX 46 CHARLOTTE) — A South Carolina teen charged with killing his two friends did so because of ties to a gang, police said.

Sam Robinson appeared in court Friday in Rock Hill where a judge denied his bond. The 16-year-old is accused of shooting his two friends, Zuinquarius McCrorey and Malik McCullough in February.

Members of McCrory’s family made their plea in court to keep Robinson behind bars.

“We’re in pain today and we are asking the court to deny bond because we just don’t know what to think of him being in the car, with him portraying to be a friend and shooting [McCrorey] like the way he did,” said Timothy Williams, McCrorey’s uncle.

Investigators said Robinson was riding in the backseat when he shot both of them in the head, killing them. The car was still in drive and kept rolling, eventually crashing into a fence at the intersection of Chestnut Street and South Jones Avenue.

Robinson got out of the car and tried to hide the gun before coming back to the scene, pretending to help the friends he had just killed, police said. His family took him from Rock Hill to Charlotte in an attempt to hide him from authorities.

The day before the murders police said Robinson shot into his friend’s parents’ house.

“McCullough’s parents were home at the time and they suffered the terror of that event,” said Det. Ryan Thomas with Rock Hill Police. “Their home and vehicle were riddled with bullets.”

Thomas told the judge why he believes Robinson shot his friends.

“While the full details of a motive are still being uncovered, one thing we know for certain is that Mr. Robinson’s actions are tied to criminal gang activity on his part,” he said.

Robinson was charged as an adult, but will not be in jail with adults. He was taken to the Juvenile Justice Facility in Columbia, SC.
