Suspected tornado rips through South Carolina neighborhood

CLOVER, SC (FOX 46 WJZY) — Neighbors in the Timberlake community in Clover, SC have come together, helping each other gather up the shingles and siding that fell off of each other’s homes during Sunday’s strong storms.

“Sounded like the house was falling down. like the roof was going to cave in. was that kind of noise,” said Timberlake resident Cynthia Lak. “All of a sudden I saw my furniture blowing in the air.”

Part of her roof and siding came off. Inside of her home, the walls started separating, jarring loose insulation and throwing dishes onto the floor.

“I felt like Dorothy. I knew it was a tornado when I saw things flying in the air,” Lak said.

She’s been forced to leave her home on Black Walnut Rd. firefighters said the building isn’t safe, so she’s packing what she can to stay at a hotel.

“I don’t know if it can be fixed. I may have to rebuild. I just don’t know,” said Lak.

Lak says it will be several weeks before she knows whether or not she’ll have to rebuild, but she says she feels lucky to be alive.

Other homes in the Timberlake neighborhood were also hit hard.

“I was laying on the couch and I heard a bunch of stuff hitting the back glass of the house. When I got up, all the patio furniture, my grill, were spinning in the air,” said Louis Gomez.

He lives across the street from Lak on Black Walnut Rd. part of his roof flew off and debris shattered one of his windows.

“It was debris everywhere and damage everywhere,” Gomez said.

After what he believes was a tornado ripped through the Timberlake neighborhood, he says people came out of their homes to help each other.

“Everyone started pitching in, picking up the debris. neighbors started getting up on the roof putting on the tarps,” he said.

A good feeling after a terrible storm.

“There was a lady down the street that ordered 30 pizzas. Everybody came over and ate pizza afterward. It was great to see everyone come together.”
