Suspected shooter admits to killing Morganton man, says it was self-defense


BURKE COUNTY, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) — A person who shot a Morganton man in the head, killing him, claims it was in self-defense, according to the Burke County Sheriff’s Office. 

The deadly shooting happened at 1:21 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 21 at the Shady Acres Mobile Home Park, Lot #30 on 3931 U.S. HWY 64. 

Upon arrival, deputies found Vernon Eugene Dale, 46, dead from what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the head. There were three adults, including the deceased, and two small children at the scene at the time of the shooting, deputies said.

Burke County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division secured a search warrant of the mobile home and are being assisted by the NC SBI with the crime scene and investigation at this time.

The person who admitted shooting Dale claimed the shooting was in self-defense. So far, no arrests have been made.
