A suspect is in custody after a lengthy standoff with police and SWAT at a home in Shelby Monday.

According to Shelby police, officers were called about 1:29 p.m. to a report of a car that had crashed into Hope Community Church, located at 1114 S. Lafayette Street. Police tell FOX 46 that the driver of the car, identified as Carl Owen McWhirter, had been shot twice by his grandson, 33-year-old Camden Own McWhirter. The driver was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte and underwent surgery. His current condition is unknown.

Officials said the Camden barricaded himself inside the home and refused to come out. After more than six and a half hours, Camden finally surrendered without incident and was taken into police custody. An AR-15 was in his possession, according to Shelby police.

Camden is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. He is being held in the Cleveland County Jail without bond.
