Student grazed by car while walking to school bus: “I’m very lucky to be alive”

CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) — A student was grazed by a vehicle Tuesday morning while walking to a stopped school bus with the safety arms out and lights on, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.

“It was like slow motion to the point once I had already crossed the street I was already on the ground. I am very lucky to be alive right now,” said 16-year-old Rikay’a Hayes.

“He hit her hard enough to break his side view mirror and knock her to the ground,” said Kinya Roseboro, Rikay’a’s mother. “That’s not a graze. Maybe that was a nice way of putting it, but that’s not a graze.”

The incident happened at the corner of Kimmerly Glen Road and Keyway Blvd. in east Charlotte.

CMS released a statement on Tuesday stating in part, “The safety and well-being of students and staff are top priorities for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools at all times. In the wake of a recent tragic accident leading to the loss of a young student and now this morning’s incident, CMS reminds drivers across the community that safety of students is a responsibility we all share.”

Drivers in all vehicles should always be aware of and look out for students and school buses at bus stops and while in transit, CMS said.

The district said they will continue to work with students and drivers on school bus safety, and ask parents to talk with their students, review school bus stop safety, look both ways before crossing streets and encourage caution every day.

“I was mostly angry because of the fact there’s a bus right there, the stop sign is out and her arm is out and she blowing her horn and you weren’t paying attention,” Hayes said.

CMS said they will continue to work with law enforcement to support aggressive investigation of and maximum penalties for vehicle-related incidents that threaten the safety of students and staff.

The student reportedly suffered minor injuries during the incident. No word if the driver involved will be charged.

FOX 46 Charlotte is working to gather more information on Tuesday morning’s incident.
