Storm snaps power pole in half, leaves live wire in middle of highway

MOORESVILLE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) — During Monday afternoon’s storms, a power pole snapped in half with the line ending up in the middle of Highway 150 in Mooresville.

“I looked out the window and was like, oh my God, that’s why we don’t have any power. The power line is on the ground.”

Rose Melville says she was in the office at Hardee’s when the wind broke the pole in two.

“The firetrucks showed up shortly after and he was in our parking lot for a while. The cars were still going over the power line. One of the cars that went over the power line pulled the poll the rest of the way down.”

She’s not just worried about losing power, but what it’s going to mean when they want to serve food in the morning.

“If we don’t get the power back on we won’t have the food to cook tomorrow,” she said.

“How long can you keep it there?” FOX 46’s Caroline Fountain asked.

“As long as you don’t open the freezer, it will stay good for a while. My manager told me to make sure all our small coolers are in the freezer so I have to do that before I leave,” Melville said.

Highway 150 reopened around 7:00 p.m., but Duke Energy crews were still fixing the power lines and pole after that.
