Sentencing hits sixth day for doctor who sexually abused gymnasts

LANSING, Mich. (WJBK) — A sentencing hearing for a former sports doctor who sexually assaulted young gymnasts continues on Tuesday. The number of survivors now on the list to speak has reached 158.

More than 120 girls and women, including former Olympic gold medalists, have already confronted Larry Nassar or had statements read on their behalf over five emotional days of sentencing.

Nassar, 54, has admitted molesting athletes during medical treatment when he was employed by Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics, which trains Olympians. Indianapolis-based USA Gymnastics on Monday announced the resignations of three key leaders – chairman Paul Parilla, vice chairman Jay Binder and treasurer Bitsy Kelley – days after former gold medalists Aly Raisman and Jordyn Wieber said in court that Nassar had sexually assaulted them. CEO Steve Penny was forced out last year.

Victim says Nassar asked to record treatments ‘to show other doctors’

On Monday, USA Gymnastics also said it has suspended former U.S. women’s national team coach John Geddert, the owner of the Twistars gymnastics club near Lansing, Michigan. It did not disclose its reasons for suspending Geddert.

Nassar already has been sentenced to 60 years in federal prison for child pornography crimes. Under a plea deal, he will get a minimum of 25 to 40 years for digitally penetrating girls under the guise of medical treatment between 1998 and 2015.

Many victims have continued criticism of Michigan State University and its president Lou Anna Simon for their responses to the serial abuse.

Emma Ann Miller, 15, said yesterday the school was still billing her mother for medical appointments in which Nassar molested Miller as recently as August 2016 – a week before he was fired.

Last week, the Michigan State University Board of Trustees asked the attorney general to investigate the school’s response
