Prosperity Village neighbors upset with location of new Chick-Fil-A

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (FOX 46 CHARLOTTE) — For people who live in the Prosperity Village area, a new Chick-Fil-A is the talk of the town.

Neighbors say the city is going against agreed upon plans with the placement of a new Chick-Fil-A in an area they say was meant for pedestrians.

“We’re one of the last few open green space areas in the city so we are getting development pressures and we are seeing development and growth in that area,” neighbor Will Russell said.

The development is causing controversy for some neighbors.

“It’s not that we are upset by the Chick-Fil-A. We are more upset about the location of the Chick-Fil-A we thought there were other areas in Prosperity Village that would work just as fine we would’ve welcomed with no problem,” said Russell.

Upset residents feel the city has gone against the neighborhood area plan they worked to put together with city leaders.

“The plan calls for our area to be very walkable pedestrian safe for bikes cars and children and right now it’s not. This was a situation where the location was against the policy the city had worked with us for two years to put together and we just didn’t feel this was the best use of land or best location for it.”

The new Chick Fil-A sits at the corner of Prosperity Church Road and Ridge Road, not far from I-485, and right down the street from many homes.

“Per the area plan done by the city that location is supposed to be the town center place where there’s most activity and development and we put a drive through in the middle of it.”

With the new development also comes more congestion.

“We’re adding more lanes of traffic we put a very auto oriented use in the heart of a pedestrian area and it’s frustrating.”

Residents are working with city staff to try to make sure this kind of thing doesn’t happen again in areas meant to be pedestrian-friendly.
