Professionals suggest ways to deal with hip pain


CHARLOTTE, N.C. (FOX 46 CHARLOTTE) — The aches and pain can really take a toll. If your hips hurt you’re not alone.

FOX 46 is getting results for your pain looking at different parts of your body and what you can do to find relief.

“It can be very limiting in terms of someone’s function,” explained Dr. Edward Brown, an orthopedic surgeon with OrthoCarolina in Rock Hill.

Brown spoke to potential patients last month who wanted to learn more about their hip pain and possible hip replacement surgery.

It’s a popular procedure with 285,000 performed each year. In the last 11 years, Brown has done more than 700 anterior hip replacements. It’s a minimally invasive option which doesn’t cut through any muscles or tendons reducing recovery time.

“If your pain is interfering with sleeping or walking activities and keeping you from doing things you would like then that is a reason to get an evaluation,” said Brown.

Surgery isn’t a solution for everyone. “There are a lot of non-operative things we can do to make you feel better without surgery,” said Brown.

Part of an evaluation includes identifying the source of your hip pain. Often times hip pain can be confused for lower back pain.

Some of the options for relief include medication or injections.

If you’re pain free now and want to stay that way Brown suggests living a healthy lifestyle along with low impact exercise. Having a strong core and muscles will help take some of the stress off of your hips.

“I recommend to patients stationary cycling, walking laps in the pool, swimming and yoga. It strengthens muscles in the hip area and improves balance,” said Brown.
