Potential Republican candidates emerge for NC09 following Harris announcement, McCrae arrest

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (FOX 46 CHARLOTTE) — The man at the center of the District Nine election fraud investigation is now facing criminal charges. Just hours ago McCrae Dowless, a campaign aide for Republican Mark Harris was booked into jail.

His charges were specifically connected to the 2016 and 2018 elections, but now, law enforcement says he could face even more.

While that’s happening, we’re also looking at who could be facing off in the new District Nine race.

On the democratic side there’s Dan McCready, who has officially announced his candidacy again.

On the Republican side, there’s now a police officer that’s filed, and a county commissioner that’s been endorsed by Mark Harris.

We could know as soon as next week when the new District Nine election will be.

The NC09 congressional race that has been mired in controversy for months. Now, it’ll start over, this time, with differences.

When asked how he felt about Democrat Dan McCready, Stony Rushing, whose name has been thrown out as a potential candidate by Harris only said: “I don’t respect him.”

Rushing, a Union County commissioner, was quickly endorsed by the former Republican candidate, although he hasn’t officially put his na,e in the ring.

“My intention was for Mark Harris to be my congressman, and when that was stolen from us, now it’s my intention to punish the people that stole it,” Rushing said in an interview with WBT Radio.

The other Republican stirring up interest is David Blackwelder– a police officer.
The former candidate for the Wake County Board of Commissioners describes himself as a life-long North Carolinian.

Other have expressed interest in the race, but have not yet officially announced.

The State Board of Elections is set to meet Monday to determine when that new primary and special election will be.

Most political experts expect it to be later, rather than sooner, meaning the district will be without representation until that point.
