Police: Woman dies after suffering medical event while driving, hitting CATS Bus


CHARLOTTE, NC — A woman has died after suffering a medical event while driving and hitting a CATS bus.

Karen Frierson was driving a 2011 Ford Escape eastbound on Central Avenue on Saturday around 4:39 p.m. 
when she suffered a medical event, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police.

Police say Frierson hit the back of a 2013 Ford Fusion that was slowing for traffic in the 900 block of Central Avenue twice.

The driver of the Ford Fusion pulled into the left lane to avoid being hit from behind again.

Frierson continued to travel eastbound in the right lane of Central Avenue when she hit the back of a CATS Bus which was stopped for a traffic light at the intersection of Central Avenue and Louise Avenue.

The CATS Bus had 13 passengers onboard at the time of the crash. Frierson and her passenger were taken to CMC-Main.

Police say Frierson was pronounced deceased at CMC. Two Passengers on the CATS Bus were also taken to CMC for non-life threatening injuries.

The CMPD Major Crash Investigation Unit responded to the scene and conducted the investigation.  Any person who witnessed the crash or has information about the case is asked to call Detective Sammis (704) 432-2169 or Crime Stoppers at (704) 334-1600.
