Police: Student charged after bringing handgun on Rocky River HS property

MINT HILL, NC (FOX 46) — UPDATE: 9/30/16 (2:45 p.m.): Mint Hill Police will be charging a Rock River High School student who brought a handgun on school property Thursday, according to police.

Dominique Malik Daniels is being charged with possession of a firearm by a felon.

The Mint Hill Police Department was called out to Rocky River High School Thursday morning in regards to a gun on campus.

Around 10:52 a.m. the school resource officer was advised a student may have a handgun on campus, according to police.

Police said the student was standing in the hallway in front of the main office and as the officer approached the student started running. The student left the school and ran into a parking lot to an area adjacent to the school, where there was a large berm, according to police.

The officer and a school employee ran after the student. The officer was able to take the student into custody.

Officers searched the area the student ran and a small caliber handgun, which had been thrown by the student, was found on top of a large dirt mound, according to police.

Police say the school was placed on lock-down for the safety of the students and staff while officers searched for the weapon. It was lifted as the weapon was recovered. 

The investigation is still ongoing and charges are pending.

The principal of the high school made the following statement:

“This is Principal Turner with an updated message. As I called about earlier, this morning, students reported that another student may have had a weapon on campus. The school was immediately placed on lockdown. The weapon was found outside the school buildings. Students and staff are safe. The student who was in possession of the weapon will be disciplined according to the code of student conduct. Families, please remind your children that any kind of weapon is not allowed on school grounds. Thank you for your support of Rocky River. If you have questions please call meet at 980-344-0409.”
