Police: Passenger killed in stolen vehicle crash


CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46) — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police responded to a fatal accident late Wednesday night involving a stolen vehicle.

Officers were called out for a License Plate Reader (LPR) in reference to a stolen vehicle hit on South Carolina registration around 11:41 p.m. on Sugar Creek Road near Reagan Drive.

Police said a 2008 Ford Fusion was reported stolen at 11:07 p.m. from the 7300 block of Nations Ford Road. The LPR captured the Ford traveling inbound on on Sugar Creek Road near Regan Drive towards North Tryon Street near West Craighead Road.

Officers followed the vehicle and requested backup.

Officers initiated a traffic stop on Atando Avenue near I-77. The driver refused to stop and sped off onto I-77 north from Atando Avenue. 

The CMPD helicopter kept the vehicle in sight. The Ford headed north on I-77 speeding and exited at 13B for I-85 south. The Ford exited on the ramp and lost control, the vehicle ran off the road to the left, traveled through the grass and into a wooded area, according to police.

The Ford hit several trees and rolled down on an embankment. Patrol Officers responded to the crash.

The driver, Sabrina Burdea,18, and a 15-year-old rear passenger were taken to CMC with serious injuries.

The front seat passenger, Marcia Lawton,18, was pronounced deceased on scene by Medic.

Burdea is currently in the hospital with injuries. Detectives obtained arrested warrants charging her with possession of a stolen vehicle, felony fleeing to elude, reckless driving and involuntary manslaughter. Once released form the hospital Burdea will be taken to the Mecklenburg County Sheriffs’ Office and served the arrest warrants.

Excessive speed is a contributing factor in this crash, no impairment is suspected.
