A man was killed after being hit by a car while trying to cross a busy roadway Monday morning in north Charlotte.

The accident happened about 7:30 a.m. in the 3400 block of Statesville Avenue near the intersection of Alma Court.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say a 2006 Mazda 5, driven by Ronald Dale Shipes, was heading south on Statesville Road when the pedestrian walked into the path of his vehicle. The pedestrian, who has been identified as 39-year-old Lewis Lairsey, was not crossing in a marked crosswalk or at an intersection, police said.

Lairsey was pronounced dead on scene.

Statesville Avenue was shut down in-bound between Jeff Adams Drive and Lasalle Street, according to CMPD. It has since been reopened.

Police say they have ruled out speed and alcohol as factors in the case.

The crash remains under investigation. Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police or Crimestoppers.
