Concord police are conducting a death investigation after a person was shot outside the entrance of CMC-Atrium Northeast’s Emergency Room.

The shooting happened in the parking lot of the emergency room, located at 920 Church Street N. Upon arrival officers found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.

“Confused, scared, but trying to keep their patients safe and remain calm,” Tyler Moore said.

He says he was inside the hospital visiting his fiancé when shots were fired around 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Cabarrus County paramedics were in the ambulance bay near the scene of the shooting and provided immediate medical treatment. He was taken into the hospital where staff continued treatment, but was later pronounced dead.

The victim has been identified as Damon Fard Bruce. His family has been notifed of his death.

According to police, this was not a random event, and Bruce knew the man who is believed to have shot him.

Police say both men were in the hospital parking lot near the emergency room entrance when some type of fight occured, resulting in the shooting.

Bruce and the suspect were not patients at the hospital. Police say it appears they were both visiting a common acquantance who is a patient.

One person is currently being questioned at police headquarters. It’s unclear what, if any, charges they face.

“We have one person we’re interviewing at the police department at this time. This was not a random act. There is an acquaintance between these two. There is no danger of an active shooter. We are not looking for anyone else,” Major Robert Ledwell said.

Ledwell says the person of interest told a responding officer that he was responsible for the shooting.

“He was here and told the officer he was the one responsible.”

Officers say they recovered the gun. They don’t know if both men were armed or what started the fight.

Police say they don’t know how many times the victim was shot. They’re looking for surveillance video to show what happened.

“Long as I’ve been at Concord Police, I don’t recall a shooting in the parking lot of anywhere else on campus.”
