Police: Feud turns deadly between two Morganton neighbors

BURKE COUNTY, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) — A 25-year-old man has been charged with murder after police said an argument between neighbors turned deadly Tuesday night in Morganton.

Officers responded to an apartment located at 607 Valdese Avenue at 6:48 p.m. Sunday, March 25 in reference to a deceased person.

Upon arrival, officers found Hubert Roland Hunter Jr., 57, dead inside the apartment. Hunter’s body was found lying in the hallway with trauma to the face and neck. Evidence suggested a struggle in the apartment and that Hunter was the victim of a homicide, police said.

As the investigation developed, bloody clothes and a knife were found in a dumpster near the apartment, police said. Information from interviews led investigators to speak to a neighbor, Darius Heasley King, 25, who was known to have disagreements with the victim.

An additional search warrant executed on King’s home revealed evidence of the crime. King lives at 607 Valdese Ave. in an apartment which is directly across the hall from the victim.

In the early morning hours of Sunday, March 25 the two men disputed over money, which resulted in the death of Hunter, police said.

King was arrested on Tuesday, March 27 and charged with one count of murder. He’s being held at the Burke-Catawba Detention Facility without bond.
