An elderly man who was reported missing over the holiday weekend was found Wednesday morning deceased near a creek, according to the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office.

Cauthen was last seen mid- afternoon Friday, December 23, at the Heath Springs Residential Care Center located at 614 Hart Street in Heath Springs.

Deputies said Cauthen was believed to have left the center on foot.

“We are thankful for the army of volunteers who assisted in the search for Mr. Cauthen. People selflessly donated their services, horses, ATV’s and refreshments. Most importantly, they gave their time. This tragedy breaks our hearts; particularly during the holidays.  We will keep this family in our thoughts and prayers and ask our community to do the same,” said Lancaster County Sheriff Barry Faile in a written statement, released on Wednesday.
