Police: 17-year-old fires BB gun into bus filled with students

A 17-year-old was taken into custody after police said he fired a BB gun into a school bus Wednesday morning carrying 47 elementary school students.

Officers with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department were called to the 2100 block of Dion Avenue in reference to an assault with a deadly weapon.

The bus driver told police that they were headed to Idlewild Road Elementary School when someone shot at the school bus.

One of the bus windows was shattered and no injuries were reported, according to police.

School officials said all of the students onboard are safe and that counselors have been made available.

Officers said they were able to locate the suspect, Jose Delgado inside a residence in the 2200 block of Dion Avenue as well as the BB gun that was used to shoot the bus.

He was taken into custody without incident and charged with shooting into an occupied vehicle and discharging a firearm within the city limits.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools released this statement: 

“The safety of the students and staff at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is a top priority. Thanks to the quick actions of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department and the professionalism of the CMS bus driver, all students remained safe and were transported to school. Extra counselors have been provided at the school for any child who may need additional support. We take any threat to the safety of our students and staff very seriously and will work with CMPD to support their active investigation of this matter.”
