Pedestrian struck, killed by vehicle in Concord ID’d

CONCORD, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) — The Concord Police Department has identified a pedestrian who was struck and killed by a vehicle Wednesday night on North Carolina Highway 49 near Central Heights Drive. 

The pedestrian has been identified as Roger Eric Mergendahl, 61, of Concord. 

Police said at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27 they were called to a crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian. They said the driver of a vehicle was lone and traveling northbound on Highway 49 when the pedestrian, Mergendahl, attempted to cross over. 

The vehicle struck Mergendahl, who was walking in the vehicle’s travel lane, police said. Witness accounts indicate that the driver of the vehicle had a green light as it entered the intersection. 

Police said Mergendahl died on scene due to his injuries. 

At this time, neither speed nor impairment are believed to have been a factor in this crash. No charges are expected.
