Parents concerned after high number of accidents involving kids hit by cars

CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46) — A FOX 46 Charlotte follow-up as there’s been an unusually high number of accidents lately involving children hit by cars. Four separate incidents in just the past two days.

In less than 48 hours four children and one teenager have been hit by cars in four separate incidents, in and around Charlotte.

“I’ve seen kids darting across the street uptown, here, across the street. It happens, it’s what kids do, but as adults we have to pay attention but we have busy schedules and we tend to not do that,” Vadontae Martin said, a parent.

Martin lives in the neighborhood near the area where a 9-year-old girl was hit by a car Monday night on Rozzelles Ferry Road. Police say the driver stopped and stayed on scene.

The young girl was taken to the hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries. Investigators have not said who was at fault, or what caused the accident. But Martin said generally-speaking, drivers don’t slow down.

“We have a problem with speeding here in this area because we’re all congested in one area,” Marin said.

Neighbors said Dunn Commons Parkway gets really crowded early in the morning and late in the evening with cars parked on both sides. One woman said it’s gotten so bad she doesn’t even let her daughter play outside near the street.

“She’s on the second floor playing on the balcony, but she doesn’t come out on the sidewalk to be in danger,” Lashawn Johnson said, a parent.

Martin said the neighborhood has talked about putting speed bumps in. He said that might help but there’s something else that can be done right away.

“Parents mostly can put the phone down and open up your eyes and pay attention,” Martin said.
