Over 50 citations issued during “Watch for Me NC” operation


CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46) — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police conducted a “Watch for Me NC” operation on Thursday. Officers said the operation is a pedestrian and bicycle safety enforcement program that CMPD partners with CDOT to keep the resident safe in Charlotte-Mecklenburg.  

The Watch for Me Operation was conducted between 12:15 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. Thursday on Trade Street between Cedar and Clarkson Streets.

The enforcement operation focused on vehicles not yielding to the pedestrians who were crossing in front of Johnson and Wales University in the mid-block crosswalk.

• At this location 33 warning citations were issued to vehicles for failing to yield to pedestrians. 
• Approximately 50 other vehicles stopped just prior to the pedestrian crosswalk when officers walked out with other pedestrians to assist them across the roadway.  These vehicles stopped when the officer stepped in the crosswalk and stopped the vehicles from proceeding.       
• Additional charges were written to the vehicles that were stopped:
22 citations were written for registration, inspection, insurance, child seat and driving while license revoked.

Officers were also posted at Trade Street and Clarkson Street enforcing pedestrian violations.

• Officers posted at this location handed out 68 warning violations to pedestrians who were not crossing in the crosswalk and crossing against the signalized hand when displaying the “Do not walk signal.

Officers were posted at Trade Street at Cedar Street enforcing pedestrian violations.

• Officers handed out 17 warning citations to pedestrians who crossed against the  signalized hand signal when displaying the do not walk signal.

Officers were posted on Cedar Street between Trade Street and 5th Street enforcing pedestrian violations.

• Officers handed out 53 warning citations who crossed mid-block on Cedar Street.  The pedestrians needed to walk the additional 30 yards to the intersection and cross when appropriate.
