CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) — One person has died after running into the rear of a CATS bus in north Charlotte late Saturday evening.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police say the crash happened in the 4700 block of north Tryon St. around 11:15 pm.  Upon arrival, officers discovered a Nissan Sentra that had crashed into the rear of a CATS bus.

The driver of the Nissan, James Allen Sumpter, 37, was pronounced dead on scene by Medic. There were 14 passengers on the bus, some with only minor injuries.

Police say that it appears speed was not a factor for either vehicle, but they do believe alcohol & drugs were a factor for the driver of the Nissan.

The Major Crash Unit & DWI Task Force continue to investigate this crash.
