Officials: Mother hit, killed by vehicle at school bus stop while dropping kids off

UNION COUNTY, NC (FOX 46) — A mother was hit and killed by a vehicle at a bus stop on State Line Road in Union County near Old Pageland-Marshville after dropping off her children, according to the Union County Sheriff’s Office.

Hanna Elisabeth Gosney, 46, sat in her car while her children boarded the bus around 6:45 a.m. The bus turned off their lights inside once the children were on and proceeded to move forward about 5 to 10 feet when one of Gosney’s children wouldn’t sit down, according to the sheriff’s office.

The sheriff’s office said the bus driver stopped in the roadway to try and get the child to sit down. There were no lights on at that time other than the bus’ headlights.

The bus driver told police Gosney got out of her car to see what was going on. The bus driver opened up the side glass window to speak to Gosney who couldn’t hear her so Gosney walked into the middle of the road and was hit by the driver of a 2007 Kia Sportage, according to the sheriff’s office.

Gosney was thrown 85 feet, according to the sheriff’s office and pronounced deceased when CMS arrived on scene.

The driver will not be charged, according to the sheriff’s office.

Gosney is a mother of five and grandmother of six. She also has a twin sister.
