HICKORY, NC (FOX 46) — A man was fatally shot by a Hickory police officer Friday after pointing a gun at police while they were executing a search warrant.
Police were called out to an officer-involved shooting at the 1200 block of 12th Street Place northwest in Hickory around 8:14 a.m. Friday morning.
Police say officers were trying to service a narcotics search warrant at the home when the incident occurred.
Once officers made their way into the home they encountered William David Whetstone, who was the person to receive the warrant. While officers gave Whetstone commands not to move, he reached between the cushions of a sofa and brought out a handgun and pointed it at officers, according to police.
Police said one officer was shot in the arm and Whetstone was shot and killed by officers. Catawba County EMS responded and Whetstone was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sergeant Rodney N. Harris was treated and released for injuries sustained. The two officers who discharged their weapons were Master Police Officer David H. Lee and Sergeant Randy W. Isenhour. They have been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation, which is standard procedure, according to police.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation was called to the scene and they are conducting an independent officer involved shooting investigation.
“This is a tragic situation and our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved,” Chief Thurman Whisnant.
