Neighbor shoots, kills dog after attacking 6-year-old in northwest Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) — Homeowners who live on Anastasia Court heard a driver blowing their horn continuously on Saturday around 4:30 p.m. The driver was trying to alert the northwest Charlotte neighborhood to a problem.

Stafford Beasley heard the commotion and stepped outside his home to see what was going on.

“So I walked out to the front of my house and I saw a pit bull had a little boy pinned to the ground, attacking him,” Beasley said. “He was biting him on his right leg.”

Beasley quickly stepped into action. He grabbed the closest thing to him, a lawn chair. He used it to wedge in between the dog and the 6-year-old boy, to break them a part.

“I had never witnessed a dog mull a child before. It was unpleasant,” he said. “The kid was helpless, there was really nothing he could do. I stepped in because it was the right thing to do.”

Even after the dog and child were separated, Beasley said the animal continued to approach them.

“It looked like the dog wanted to kill. I’d never seen anything like it,” he said.

As Beasley continued trying to keep the dog away, a different neighbor stepped in and shot at the animal. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said the dog died from its injuries and was transported to a shelter, where it will be tested for rabies. Investigators said there is no previous history with the animal and that citations are expected towards the dog’s owner.

On Sunday, neighbors said the boy was still in the hospital recovering from his wounds. Police said the child’s injuries were non-life threatening.

Leading up to the incident, witnesses reported seeing the 6-year-old playing outside with another child. Police believe the dog broke loose from its collar while being walked and then attacked the child.
