A murder suspect is in custody following an eight-hour long standoff Tuesday afternoon in southwest Charlotte, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police.

Both Gerardo Lagunes, 17, and Juan Deras Escalante, 18, were wanted for the murder of Domingo Venancio-Tapia.

Police said they located and arrested Lagunes on Tuesday, April 30 without incident and charged him with murder.

Later that same day at 3:11 p.m. the Violent Criminal Apprehension Team responded to the 5600 block of Coulee Place in an attempt to serve warrants on Escalante. Attempts to make contact with Escalante were unsuccessful. Members of the SWAT Team and negotiators were called in.

As a precaution, officers relocated nearby residents.

After an eight hour standoff with SWAT and not speaking with negotiators, Escalante was taken into custody without incident. He has been charged with murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, and four counts of shooting into an occupied property.

This remains an open and ongoing investigation. Anyone with further information is asked to call 704-432-TIPS or the public can call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
