MOUNT HOLLY, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) — Around 2:00 a.m. on Monday, homeowners who live on Scaleybark Court started to smell smoke. When they looked outside their homes, they saw flames.

Neighbors like Issac Vargas hopped out of bed and in the direction of the fire. He knew a family of six, two parents and four children, could be inside.

He approached the home, but couldn’t get too close because of the jumping embers. The army veteran then started knocking on the homes next to the house that was on fire to let people know the flames were spreading quickly.

When firefighters arrived, neighbors were told the family wasn’t home. But hours later, they arrived at the house as the flames were still being knocked down at their home.

“Sad to see them react to having lost everything. I mean, you work your whole life to get your home, memories and everything, and it’s all gone,” Vargas said.

Then the community decided to come together and do something to help.

Vargas and others helped start a GoFundMe. Neighbors like Anita Younger are donating.

“This is the time to come together and support this precious family,” Younger said. “You just see a lot of people shaking their heads, grateful I guess it isn’t them. And grateful this family is okay.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
