Mecklenburg Co. jury duty scam

CHARLOTTE, NC — The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s office is warning citizens about an increased number of jury duty scams where the caller impersonates a deputy sheriff.

“We’ve received several calls in recent days from concerned citizens who’ve been threatened with fines and jail time if they do not comply,” said Sheriff Irwin Carmichael.

In the most recent cases the caller identifies as Major Collins, a current MCSO employee.

The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office and employees of the North Carolina Courts System will not ask for personal information including social security numbers, credit card numbers, money or any other sensitive financial information over the phone.

Anyone receiving such calls should not provide the requested information.  If they have questions, they can contact the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office by calling (980) 314-5002.  If a person needs to confirm jury service, they can call (704) 686-0195.
