ROCK HILL, SC (FOX 46) — A 28-year-old man is dead after police say he was shot by a 76-year-old business owner who claims he was assaulted in Rock Hill on Sunday.
Around 1 a.m., York County deputies responded to a shooting call at the Hideaway Club located at 405 Baskins Road. When they arrived to the club, they found Christopher Elkins suffering from a gunshot wound.
EMS transported Elkins to a Charlotte area hospital where he later died.
“I heard two huge gunshots,” said Gladys Gore. “There was a fight in the club and two people were shot from my understanding, and the only thing I saw was a lady being worked on in the ambulance who was shot in her left shoulder,” she said.
Officials believe Elkins and several other people were involved in an altercation inside the Hideaway Club. Elkins and the others with him were asked to leave the premises and were escorted by employees to the parking lot.
Soon after, Elkins returned to the club and was stopped at the door by the 76-year-old business owner. The owner was allegedly assaulted by Elkins in his attempt to re-enter the club.
The owner felt threatened, took out a gun and fatally shot Elkins, York Co deputies say.
The family told FOX 46 Charlotte, they were surprised pulled the owner trigger because of how well they know him.
“He’s a very, very nice guy,” said Joette Stevenson. “I hope he’s in no trouble cause like I said I’m bound to believe they had to push him to the point. They had to go out too far for him to do that,” she said.
No arrests have been made.
The investigation is still ongoing.
