Man dies after being swept away by flood waters in Union County

UNION COUNTY, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) — A man’s body was found floating in flood waters early Monday morning in Union County, adding to the number of lives claimed by Hurricane Florence.

Clayborn Lee Wright, 88, was found about 6 a.m. along Landsford Road by a passing motorist after they noticed his car partially submerged in water, according to the Union County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities say Wright tried to drive through the flooded road and his was was washed into a field. His body was found floating on the passenger side of the car.

A window down on Wright’s car was down. Officials say they’re unsure if he was trying to get out of the car.

Wright’s death is the second in Union County, and the third for the greater Charlotte area, attributed to Hurricane Florence. One-year-old Kaiden Lee-Welch was killed after he and his mother were swept away by flood waters on NC 218. 

In Gaston County, a 3-month-old was killed after a tree fell onto a home. 

As of Monday afternoon, the death toll attributed to Florence stood at 19, including 13 in North Carolina and six in South Carolina.
