Man charged with murder in Rowan Co. overnight shooting

ROWAN COUNTY, NC (WJZY) — The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office have arrested and charged a man for the shooting death of Dewey Ervin Gray.

Officers were called out to the 5900 block of Foster Road in Woodleaf, NC a little after 2:00 a.m. Monday morning to investigate a possible shooting.

When deputies arrived they found Gray lying in the driveway. Gray was able to tell deputies that he had been shot by someone nicknamed “Booker.” 

EMS arrived and began treating Gray who was taken to Baptist Hospital via helicopter. Gray passed away at the Baptist Hospital, according to authorities.

Investigators were able to identify the suspect, “Booker,” as James Leonard Stewart.

Stewart is in custody and has been charged with murder. He is being held at the Rowan Co. Detention Center under no bond.

While investigating deputies found several one pot meth labs at the Stewart’s home. That investigation is continuing.
