Man charged with murder in death of 20-day-old baby in Kannapolis


KANNAPOLIS, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) — A man has been charged with first-degree murder in connection to the death of a newborn baby in Kannapolis, police said. 

Maurice Daniels, 39, is charged with first-degree murder and child abuse causing serious bodily injury.

Neighbors at Cabarrus Arms Apartments, where police say the abuse occurred, say Daniels is the boyfriend of the infant’s mother.

The baby girl suffered “abusive head trauma” and a “broken clavicle,” according to arrest warrants.

On Friday, Feb. 9 the Kannapolis Police Department was notified by the Department of Social Services of a possible assault on a 17-day-old baby girl. She was taken to Carolinas Medical Center for treatment. On Monday, Feb. 12, the baby died as a result of her injuries. 

Daniels was arrested on Monday without incident at the Knights Inn on Nations Ford Road in Charlotte. by CMPD officers for probation violations which were not related to the child’s death.

Daniels is currently being held at the Cabarrus County Jail without bond.
