Man arrested in police assault that led to shots fired

MOORESVILLE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) — A man has been arrested after trying to evade a Mooresville police officer overnight. The officer then fired several shots at the suspect.

“They shot ten or twelve shots,” said Joey Perkins who lives next-door to Mooresville Fire Station Three.

27-year-old Jeffrey Daniel Stewart has been charged with resist, delay and obstruction of an officer, reckless driving to endanger and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill after he reportedly drove a U-Haul van toward Officer Sheldon around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday.

It incident started with a call about two suspicious vehicles park at the fire station at Shearers Road and Blackwelder Farm Drive. Police say there were several people inside both vehicles when they arrived on scene.

Stewart attempted to flee the scene, accelerating toward the officer in the van. That’s when Officer Sheldon pulled out his gun. The U-Haul was left riddled with bullets.

“Definitely not routine for our neighborhood. It’s definitely not something that’s happened here before. We’ve lived in Mooresville for years and haven’t had anything,” said Misty Eller who lives across the street.

No one was hit by the gunfire, and Stewart was taken into custody at the scene. He is being held at the Iredell County Jail under a $100,000 bond.

“It is unsettling that something like that happened right across the street, but at the same time to know that police were right on it, someone called in a suspicious vehicle is a little more calming knowing everyone is keeping their eyes out,” said Garry Eller, Misty’s husband.
