Man accused of sexually assaulting 2 young girls faces more charges

CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) — A Charlotte man who was arrested earlier this week for sexually assaulting two young girls in a park is now facing more charges, police said.

Ivan Dawkins, 43, is facing an additional six counts of indecent liberties with a child, attempted first-degree rape, and sex offense by a substitute parent.

Dawkins was originally arrested and charged on Sunday, Oct. 15  with two counts of indecent liberties with a child and statutory sex offense with a child.

CMPD officers said they were called to the 1400 block of Armory Drive in reference to a sexual assault report. A witness told police that he saw a man sexually assaulting two young girls and immediately called 911.

Responding CMPD officers located Dawkins and the two little girls, ages 7 and 9, nearby. It was quickly determined that Dawkins was a caregiver of the girls at the time of the assault.

CMPD said the new charges filed on Thursday stem from the assault in the park at 1400 Armory Drive as well as prior assaults against the same two victims.

Dawkins is currently being held at the Mecklenburg County Jail under a $160,000 secured bond.

Additional charges may be forthcoming. This remains an ongoing, active investigation.
