A woman in Lincoln County has been charged with child abuse after police say she was caught on surveillance pulling the hair of an 18-month-old child at the daycare where she worked.

On Friday, March 23, deputies spoke with the mother of the 18-month child who said that on Wednesday, March 21, she received a call from the Mini Academy Daycare Center on Unity Church Road in Denver that another child had pulled her daughter’s hair hard enough to pull hair out but the child was OK.

Several hours later a staff member at the academy called the mother and told her that after they reviewed the video “it shows a staff member pulling the child’s hair and not another child.”

The employee, identified Rebecca Nicole DeGregory, 23, was suspended and then terminated from the daycare center by the owner the same day the incident occurred.

The daycare manager says she’s never had any issues with the former employee before this.

“Did you pull the hair from that child’s head?” FOX 46’s Caroline Fountain asked DeGregory in an exclusive interview.

“No,” she said.

DeGregory denies that she was the one who pulled the child’s hair, and says she saw a little boy with a handful of hair. That’s when she noticed the spot on the other child’s head and reported it to her supervisor.

The manager of the daycare says there were six children in the classroom with DeGregory when she pulled the child’s hair and says they have video showing exactly what happened.

DeGregory doesn’t believe the video shows all of the details.

“What they saw was when I walked up to the child to take the plate, my right hand touched the head. They said they watched all day footage of video and never saw the two children together. But there are two whole centers in my classroom that aren’t on camera at all,” she said.

DeGregory has been charged with one misdemeanor count of child abuse. She was released on a $5,000 unsecured bond with a court date of Friday, April 6.
