Large snake found in Lake Norman

One of the largest water snakes an expert has ever heard of was found in Lake Norman over the weekend.

A FOX 46 Charlotte viewer sent photos of the snake after they found it near a relative’s home on Lake Norman. The family, not knowing whether the snake was poisonous, killed the snake when they saw it.

The family said the snake was around 5 1/2 feet long.

Karl McKinnon, Assistant Director for the Schiele Museum of Natural History and Planetarium said water snakes in North Carolina are mostly harmless and you should leave them alone in their natural habitat.

“I would suggest in this area to pretty much just observe it and stay away from it,” McKinnon said. “That’s not to say you couldn’t find a copperhead or potentially a rattlesnake in some areas (outside of water).”

McKinnon said in 35 years, he can’t remember seeing a water snake larger than this one.
