Interstate-85: One of the nation’s deadliest roads

CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) — Interstate-85 is in the top 25 deadliest highways in the nation, and the section through the Queen City is considered the most dangerous part of that interstate, according to a study by the GPS tracking company Teletrac Navman.

A fatal accident happened just one day ago, on Sunday at Exit 30 on Interstate-85.

Charlotte is now considered home to some of the most dangerous roadways in the nation, with Interstate-85 deemed one of the deadliest. The interstate ranked no. 15 on the list of 25 highways, according to the study.

From 2011 to 2015, 378 people lost their lives on Interstate-85 stretching from Petersburg, Virginia through Charlotte, North Carolina to Montgomery, Alabama with one death every half-mile.

State troopers responded to a major collision on Sunday, Nov. 19  at Exit 30 where the driver of a pickup truck was traveling too fast and rammed into the back of an 18-wheeler. The driver was pronounced dead on scene.

Five other interstates with routes running through the Carolinas are also on the list of deadliest highways; I-40, I-95, I-26, I-20, and US-17.

Still no word on the identity of Sunday’s fatal wreck. State troopers tell FOX 46 Charlotte alcohol may have been a factor.
