A husband and wife are dead after a massive 2-alarm fire destroyed a southeast Charlotte home overnight, fire officials said.
The fire happened at 1:23 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 1 at a house located at 8315 Wingfield Lane.
The couple has been identified by family as Dennis and Susan Swafford. Their dog, “Sandy” also died in the fire.

Firefighters found the couple and their dog deceased inside the house early Thursday morning. It took approximately 50 firefighters about 40 minutes to get the large fire under control.
Several hours passed before authorities could confirm the two bodies found inside the burned home were a man and a woman.

ATF and SBI agents have joined CMPD and Charlotte Fire in the death and fire investigation. The ATF Task Force is usually called in to investigate cases of arson.
The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation.
