CORNELIUS, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) — A local 9-year-old with a rare syndrome got to spend an afternoon with a Harlem Globetrotter on Friday.

Sophia Weaver is from Cornelius. When she was just a toddler, she was diagnosed with Rett syndrome– a genetic mutation that can cause young girls to lose coordination, speech, and use of the hands.

Sophia was also born with facial deformities and unfortunately became the target of some internet trolls.

To lift her spirits, Harlem Globetrotters star Hoops Green paid Sophia a visit ahead of the Globetrotters’ games! The whole family got in on the fun, and Sophia’s smile showed through.

Sophia’s mom, Natalie Weaver, shared some of the heartwarming moments on her Twitter account.

Hoops is the 14th woman to join the Globetrotters in the team’s 92-year history. The Globetrotters will play two games at Halton Arena this Saturday, March 24, as part of their 2018 “Amazing Feats of Basketball World Tour.”
