Grave markers vandalized at West Charlotte church cemetery

More than a dozen grave markers were vandalized at a West Charlotte church on Thursday.

CMPD confirmed it’s investigating the vandalism at Salem Baptist Church Cemetery off Rozzelle’s Ferry Road.

The cemetery hosts less than 100 graves with many of them dating back to the 1800’s.

“These people are dead, I mean, you can’t just let them be?” West Charlotte’s Chris Thompson asked.

Thompson said he walks by the cemetery frequently. Grave markers were kicked over — some broken in half when he walked by on Friday.

“To have to go through the headache and the struggle of burying your loved and then having to come back here and repair their grave, I mean, that’s kind of messed up,” Thompson said.

Salem Baptist is a predominantly African-American church. CMPD did not respond when asked if this is being investigated as a hate crime.

Anyone with information is asked to call CMPD Crimestoppers at (704) 334-1600.
