Getting Results for America: Volunteers rebuild Charlotte Vietnam veteran’s deck

CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) — Volunteers from the Home Depot in Cornelius are getting results for a Vietnam veteran in southwest Charlotte by rebuilding his deck.

Richard Moore is a proud Vietnam Air Force veteran, but that wasn’t always the case.

“It’s only been in the last ten years that I would even tell anybody I was in the service or wear a hat because it just didn’t feel right. Now you feel more accepted,” Moore said.

He says times have changed.

“People thank you for your service even children, and wow let me put two hats on. You just feel good now.”

A group of volunteers from the Home Depot came to Moore’s house Wednesday morning and worked all day getting results for him and his wife. They ripped up boards and put down a new floor for the Moores’ deck in the Clanton Park neighborhood in southwest Charlotte.

“It’s special. It makes us feel special for one thing,” Moore said. He admits it would have been quite a job for him to try all by himself.

“I would be out there with a saw and a hammer and messing up stuff,” Moore joked. “My wife and I–we love to relax outside.”

“You could just see the excitement on their face that they were getting something done,” Shannon Campbell, a volunteer, said. Moore said he’s developed friendships with the volunteers.

“After I met them, it seemed like I’ve known them for years.”
