CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) — A former employee at Johnson C. Smith University was arrested Monday following sexual assault allegations that were filed against him nearly 20 years later.
Queen Amani Miller spoke to FOX 46 Charlotte on Saturday stating, “I was too afraid. Totally too afraid. How do you, as a child, really go back to say ‘my teacher is sleeping with me, is raping me and now, I’m pregnant by my teacher?” Miller explained.
Miller said it all began at Johnson C. Smith University during a summer program called Upward Bound when Miller was just 14-years-old.
In December 2017, she filed a police report and confronted alleged her abuser, Michael Peterson.
“He did not apologize. It’s like he did not care that he did this to me,” Miller said.
Miller said that she had reached out to the Human Resources Dept. at JCSU before filing the charges and they admitted to her they had fired Peterson 20 years ago for similar allegations.
Johnson C. Smith University released this statement to FOX 46 Charlotte Monday:
“An administrator at Johnson C Smith University became aware of Ms. Miller’s allegations shortly before she filed a police report in late 2017. Michael Peterson was employed by the University from 1998-1999.
The University has fully cooperated with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department in its investigation. We have no further information to provide as this is an ongoing CMPD investigation.”
FOX 46 also discovered that Peterson was employed as a teacher’s assistant at Lake Norman Charter from Aug. 2016 to this past Saturday, March 17, when he resigned from his position.
Statement from Lake Norman Charter to FOX 46 Charlotte Monday:
“Mr. Michael Peterson was employed as a teacher’s assistant at Lake Norman Charter from August 2016 to this past Saturday, March 17, when he resigned his position effective immediately.
Later that day, we learned from our school resource officer (SRO) that he was under investigation for an alleged crime dating back to 1998. We have no further comment or information on this matter.”
FOX 46 Charlotte will provide updates as the case develops.
This story originally stated that Peterson was a professor at Johnson C. Smith University. It has been corrected to reflect his employee status as an administrator with the Upward Bound program.
