First case of rabies confirmed in Gaston County

GASTON COUNTY, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) — The first case of rabies in Gaston County was confirmed on Friday. 

On Wednesday, March 21 the Gaston County Animal Care and Enforcement was called to the 2400 block of Gelsinger Ave. in Bessemer City for a sick raccoon reported in the backyard of the home.

Animal Care and Enforcement Specialists investigated the incident and took the raccoon from the yard.

The raccoon was processed for rabies testing and was sent to the NC Laboratory of Public Health in Raleigh. The official laboratory results revealed that the animal was positive for rabies.

The Gaston County Department of Health and Human Services has been notified and the Animal Care and Enforcement Specialists began a canvass of the area where the animal was found to advise residents of the incident and verify pet rabies vaccinations.

Gaston County Animal Care all pets to have an up-to-date rabies vaccination for their health and safety as well as that of their owners and community.
